Wilnecote School Celebrates New Cohort of Autism Advocates

Wilnecote School is proudly celebrating its latest cohort of Autism Advocates, with 30 students successfully completing a dedicated course this academic year. The programme, led by Miss Jones, has equipped students with valuable skills and knowledge to support their neurodivergent peers.

The graduating students gathered today to receive their certificates and commemorate their achievement with a group photo. Each advocate was presented with a certificate by Miss Jones, alongside a nationally recognised AQA Unit Award in Autism Awareness.

Of the 30 students trained, 20 will continue their vital work within the school from September. Year 11 leavers will take their newly acquired skills and understanding with them, ready to make a positive impact in their future environments. Those remaining at Wilnecote will be easily identifiable by unique, handmade Autism pins worn on their uniforms, signalling them as a friendly and supportive presence for students who may need assistance during the school day.

New Initiatives on the Horizon

Looking ahead, Wilnecote School is set to launch a Monday Breaktime Friendship Group starting in September. This inclusive initiative, open to all students regardless of diagnosis, aims to support anyone experiencing difficulties in forming friendships. The group will be led by Miss Jones and bolstered by the newly trained Autism Advocates, offering a welcoming, autism-friendly space for students to connect and build relationships.

Miss Jones shared her enthusiasm for the new group, stating, “We want to offer a safe and supportive space for any student who may be struggling socially. We hope that by attending the group, students will find new friends they can connect with throughout the week.”

Furthermore, the successful Autism Advocate course will be expanded next academic year, becoming available to a wider range of students. Those interested in learning more about the course or the new Friendship Group are encouraged to speak with Miss Jones in the Library during Monday break times.
