A Splash of Yellow: Celebrating Connection and Belonging at Wilnecote

Listen to this news story read by Adelina from Year 10

Students arriving at The Wilnecote School this morning were greeted with a bright splash of yellow as staff and our Student Leadership Team handed out ribbons and stickers to mark World Mental Health Day. Alongside this welcoming start, form groups have been crafting multicoloured paper chains filled with personal messages celebrating friendship, clubs, and belonging.

You may have noticed a distinctly bright theme at the school gates today. Staff were ready and waiting to hand out yellow ribbons and stickers to students as they arrived to start their day. This gesture was our way of marking World Mental Health Day, ensuring everyone felt seen and valued from the moment they stepped through the doors.

The ribbons were just the start of the morning’s activities. Students were also given the opportunity to put the finishing touches on a massive creative project that form groups have been working on all week. They have been busy building incredibly long paper chains. While yellow is the traditional colour for mental health awareness, our chains are brightly multicoloured to represent inclusivity.

On every single link, students have written personal messages about what makes them feel connected here. The honesty and warmth in their words have been wonderful to read. One student wrote that their friendship group makes them “feel welcome and make me laugh until my tummy hurt,” while another shared, “Being in Mrs. Hill’s room at lunchtime because I feel that I can be myself.”

Headteacher Mr Foskett was delighted with how the morning unfolded. “Mental health is a vital focus for us, and we want our students to feel uplifted from the moment they arrive,” he said. “Seeing them greeted with such positivity this morning, and reading the thoughtful messages about friendship on their paper chains, highlights exactly what a friendly place this school is. We are incredibly proud of how our students look out for one another.”

Seeing these colourful chains draped together is a powerful visual reminder that we are all part of one big, supportive network, celebrating the fact that we look out for each other every single day.
