Year 7 students at Wilnecote School recently took to the local roads, demonstrating impressive cycling prowess and a keen aptitude for bike maintenance during their Bikeability days. The programme, designed to equip young cyclists with essential road safety knowledge and practical skills, saw students undertake Level 3 training and Bikeability Fix.

The Level 3 Bikeability course challenged students to navigate real-world traffic scenarios, including safely manoeuvring around islands, interacting with HGVs, and understanding the dynamics of other road users. Instructors were highly commendatory of the students’ performance.
“We were incredibly impressed with the Wilnecote Year 7s,” remarked a Bikeability instructor. “Their ability, positive attitude, and exemplary behaviour stood out. They were eager to learn and applied themselves brilliantly, making our job a real pleasure.”

Beyond mastering on-road safety, the students also delved into the mechanics of their bikes with the Bikeability Fix module. Here, they gained invaluable practical skills, learning how to fix a puncture, change a tyre, and even adjust their brakes. In a testament to the effectiveness of the training, one student, who had been contemplating buying a new bicycle due to mechanical issues, successfully repaired all the problems with their current bike in a single morning session.

Mrs Abbott, PE Teacher and organiser of the Bikeability days at The Wilnecote School, expressed her satisfaction with the programme’s success. “It’s fantastic to see our students not only developing crucial road safety skills but also gaining such practical life lessons in bike maintenance,” she commented. “The feedback from the instructors truly highlights the excellent character of our Year 7s.”

The Bikeability programme at Wilnecote School continues to empower students with the confidence and skills needed to cycle safely and independently, fostering a new generation of competent and self-reliant cyclists.
