Wilnecote’s Golden Generation: Year 9s March Into Second Successive County Final

The Wilnecote School’s Year 9 football team is on the brink of history. After a sensational campaign last year that saw them crowned County Champions, the squad has officially booked their place in the final for the second year running.

It has been a relentless journey for the reigning champions, who have brushed aside some of the region’s toughest competition to prove that their previous success was only the beginning.

The Journey to the Final

The campaign kicked off with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over de Ferrers Academy in Round 1, a match that proved Wilnecote had lost none of their clinical attacking edge. They followed this up with arguably their most disciplined performance of the season in the Round of 16, dismantling King Edward VI in a dominant 4-0 shutout.

The Quarter-Finals saw the boys face off against Erasmus Darwin, and the result was emphatic. In a staggering display of teamwork and finishing, Wilnecote triumphed 8-4 in a game that will be remembered for its sheer goal-scoring brilliance.

However, the Semi-Final provided the ultimate test of their championship credentials. In a tense, tactical battle against St John Fisher, the boys showed incredible grit to edge out a 3-2 win, demonstrating the “bounce-back” ability that defines a winning team.

A Proud Moment for the School

The team’s coach and PE Teacher, Mr Doyley, has been instrumental in guiding the boys through this high-pressure season. Reflecting on the achievement, he praised the squad’s development both on and off the pitch:

“I’m immensely proud to see the boys be in the final for a second time in two years. It’s a massive honour to see them growing in maturity, showing the ambition and resilience to continue their success in the competition.”

As the school prepares for the final, the excitement in the corridors is palpable. The boys have shown they have the talent; now, they have the chance to cement their legacy as one of the most successful teams in Wilnecote’s history.
