Wilnecote Year 8 Warriors Storm into County Finals with Thrilling 5-2 Victory!

The roar from the touchline could be heard for miles as Wilnecote’s Year 8 football team secured their place in the coveted County Finals with a stunning 5-2 victory over a determined Perton High School side, on The Wilnecote School pitches.

The match saw Wilnecote take an early lead, thanks to a goal from James R, sparking jubilant scenes amongst the home supporters. However, Perton quickly responded, levelling the score and threatening to dampen the Wilnecote spirits.

But this Wilnecote team is made of stern stuff. Oscar S restored the lead with a moment of magic, his curling effort leaving the Perton keeper rooted to the spot. Then Theo B added to the score line, followed by Joel T’s spectacular first-time volley at the back post, putting Wilnecote firmly in control at 4-1. Just before the half-time whistle, Perton managed to pull one back, offering a glimmer of hope.

The second half saw Perton battling valiantly, but Wilnecote’s defence stood firm, refusing to concede. Perton pressed and pushed but Wilnecote’s backline held firm. The Wilnecote team never looked like they were in any danger of losing the game, but Perton applied the pressure. The tension was palpable as Perton fought to reduce the deficit, but Wilnecote remained resolute.

Then, with just 8 minutes remaining, George H, usually a stalwart defender, launched a breathtaking run from his own half, culminating in a ‘goal of the season’ contender, sealing the victory and allowing the team to relax for the final minutes.

The goals came from James R, Oscar S with a brilliant curling shot, Theo B, Joel T’s volley, and the unforgettable solo effort from George H.

A special mention must go to Dougie D, who put in a man-of-the-match performance, anchoring the midfield and driving the team forward throughout the entire game.

“The boys were absolutely brilliant,” said a beaming Mr. Doyle, PE teacher and manager of the Wilnecote team. “They showed real character to come back after Perton equalised, and the quality of the goals was outstanding. We’re incredibly proud of them.”

The victory means Wilnecote now face Cheslyn Hay in the County Finals, promising an exciting climax to an already memorable season. The entire school and local community are behind them as they prepare to battle for the county title. Good luck, Wilnecote!
