Mind Matters: Year 9 Students Champion Well-being

We were delighted to host a Mental Health Awareness Workshop for all Year 9 students at the start of February. The session was designed to help students build resilience, appreciate the importance of mental health awareness, and acquire practical strategies to support themselves and those around them.

Recognising that adolescence can be a challenging period, we considered it crucial to equip our students with the skills necessary to manage their emotional well-being. The workshop aimed to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and empower students to seek help whenever required. While discussing mental health can be difficult, the workshop ensured students felt seen, heard, and supported throughout.

During the session, students took part in a range of activities and discussions. These focused on recognising signs of anxiety and depression, exploring practical coping strategies, and the value of empathy within our school community. The sensitive nature of these topics was approached with commendable respect; we were deeply impressed by the level of engagement shown as students listened to peers and worked collaboratively on meaningful solutions.

A particular highlight was a group project where students developed and pitched innovative ideas for new mental health resources. These activities were crafted not only to foster teamwork and critical thinking but also to encourage students to take an active role in promoting well-being among their peers.

Special Recognition Congratulations to Logan H, Jayden B, Scarlett H, Freya H, and Dubem A from 9E, whose presentation was a standout moment of the workshop. This talented group received recognition for the most innovative idea to support students experiencing anxiety and depression. Their project, presented confidently to the entire cohort as part of a national competition, demonstrated exceptional creativity.

The judges were particularly impressed by their original approach to marketing, the thoroughness of their sponsorship proposals, and their practical suggestions for fostering an inclusive environment. It is a remarkable achievement for this team to be invited to represent The Wilnecote School at the UK final in London later this year. We are extremely proud of their success.

We believe this workshop has made a meaningful impact, equipping students with valuable life skills as they navigate the complexities of adolescence and beyond.

Mr S Hyden, Head of Year, commented:

“I am incredibly proud of our Year 9 students for the maturity and dedication they showed throughout this workshop. Their willingness to engage deeply with these important topics and support one another demonstrates the caring, resilient spirit we strive to nurture at The Wilnecote School.”
