Wilnecote Celebrates World Book Day

The corridors of The Wilnecote School were transformed into a literary wonderland recently as we celebrated World Book Day. This year, our focus was on “Reading for Pleasure,” encouraging students to look beyond the classroom and discover the vast range of stories, voices, and formats waiting for them on the library shelves.

The Great ‘Dress a Door’ Challenge

The highlight of the week was the return of the much-anticipated Dress a Door Competition. Our Key Stage 3 form groups rose to the challenge, turning plain entrances into vibrant gateways to other worlds.

  • Year 7: Tasked with promoting a specific writer, resulting in some truly inspirational tributes to beloved authors.

  • Years 8 & 9: Tasked with exploring genres and sources of reading. The variety was staggering, ranging from dystopian fiction and poetry to song lyrics and even cookbooks!

A massive well done to our winning forms: 7LD, 7EL, 8AD, 8ATR, 8IF, and 9OD. Your hard work and teamwork truly brought the school to life.

Tattie Books: A Spud-tacular Success!

In one of our more “organic” competitions, students were invited to take part in the Tattie Book Challenge. The brief was simple yet surreal: recreate a famous book cover and fashion the main character entirely out of a potato.

The creativity on display was exceptional, but three entries truly “mashed” the competition:

Rank: Student: Year: Book Tribute:
1st Place Lexi O 9 The Hunger Games
2nd Place Grace S 9 Peter Rabbit
3rd Place Chloe F 8 The Lighthouse

Congratulations to Lexi for her winning Katniss Everdeen-inspired potato, and to Grace and Chloe for their fantastic runner-up designs.

A Word from Mrs M Whiffin:

“I am incredibly proud of the energy and imagination our students and staff have poured into this year’s celebrations,” commented one of our lead organisers. “The ‘Dress a Door’ displays brought a fantastic buzz to the corridors, and the ‘Tattie Books’ showed just how much wit and creativity our Key Stage 3 students possess. It has been wonderful to see the whole school community come together to champion the joy of reading; the standard of entries truly exceeded all our expectations.”
