Ambitious
Proud
An excited set of Wilnecote swimmers entered the Key Stage 3 Tamworth District swim gala with great expectations and ambition.
The new look gala saw a competitive field of swimmers from across the Tamworth secondary Schools compete in individual events and a series of freestyle relay races.
Swimmers were given plenty of time to warm up for this much-anticipated event, and the Wilnecote team made the very most of this, setting themselves up for an evening of success.
Several of our swimmers were representing the school for the first time and were supported well by the more experienced team members, creating a real sense of ‘team’ and ultimately giving our Wilnecote side the competitive edge.
The competition was sometimes frantic, as swimmers pulled on their last energy reserves, cheered on by those waiting for their events and creating several very close finishes.
Final results saw The Wilnecote School win hands down by a massive 137 points… 34 points more than the school fishing in second place.
Alex who broke the backstroke record with a time of 32.69 seconds
This success was even more personal for two of our year eight swimmers as they broke long-standing records for their age groups in backstroke. Alex broke the year eight boys’ record, which had been held for 12 years, with a time of 32.69 seconds, whilst Maddie smashed the record for year eight girls, which had been held for more than ten years, with a time of 27.97 seconds. It was a phenomenal achievement for both swimmers, of which they should be incredibly proud.
Of course, with our focus on ambition, they have both been set a new target to break their record in this week’s gala on Thursday, 24th April, when we do it all again, but this time also involves our KS 4 team.
Can they do it again? Look out for news from this next event on our new school app and social media streams…
