Physical Fellowship 2024

On Thursday 4th July, a group of students from The Wilnecote School took to the stage at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre as part of The Physical Fellowship Project. This week-long performance festival, run by theatre company Highly Sprung, offers young people a unique platform to showcase their talents.

The Wilnecote students’ journey began on Tuesday 18th June when a Highly Sprung artist visited the school. Over the following two days, they collaborated to create a physical theatre piece exploring the theme of power. Set in a dystopian future dominated by technology, the performance depicted humanity’s struggle to reclaim control.

The students spent an action-packed day at the Belgrade Theatre, participating in a variety of performance workshops to explore different theatrical styles. In the afternoon, they joined students from other schools for a masterclass led by Highly Sprung before taking to the B2 stage for a technical rehearsal.

Wilnecote School opened the show with a dynamic and energetic physical theatre performance before enjoying the rest of the evening’s performances from the gallery. Despite the long day, the students’ hard work and incredible performance made everyone immensely proud. However, the most rewarding aspect was witnessing students from different year groups and classes form new friendships.

Miss Julius, Head of Performing Arts, commented:

“This experience has been transformative for our students. To see them blossom on a professional stage, collaborating with other schools, is a testament to their talent and resilience. They’ve not only honed their performance skills but also developed invaluable life skills.”

Jamie Kelly, one of the performers, added:

“Stepping onto the Belgrade stage was like a dream come true. The energy in the theatre was electric. Working with the other students was amazing – we created something truly special together. I’ll never forget this experience.”

Performing on a professional stage is an extraordinary achievement for any actor, but for young people, it takes immense courage. The Wilnecote School is incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
