PE at The Wilnecote School

The Physical Education department is made up of six specialist PE teachers.

The department is led by Tom Croydon, who has taught at The Wilnecote School since September 2021. Prior to this, he worked at a school in Birmingham for over 15 years, predominantly as a teacher of PE but also with responsibility for Educational Visits and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Our curriculum aspect lead for PE is Allie Dickins. Allie is a very experienced, and extremely enthusiastic PE practitioner. Emma Abbott is another member of the PE department, who has been with us for over 20 years. Emma brings a keen passion for Netball and girls’ football to the department. Both Allie and Emma are key figures in the organisation of school sport in Tamworth, leading the Tamworth School Sport Association. Olly Doyle is our fourth and final full-time member of the PE department. Olly started his journey at The Wilnecote School in September 2022 as an ECT and brings a wealth of new ideas to our curriculum and has really helped boost our fantastic extra-curricular offer. Mark Herbert, Assistant Headteacher, and David Foskett, Headteacher, make up our department, bringing a vast experience of teaching various sports to the department.

The PE department has a fantastic range of teaching staff, all with different strengths who work together to give the students at The Wilnecote School the very best experience of secondary school PE. Our shared vision and a strong ethos ensure all students make very good progress in all aspect of PE at The Wilnecote School. Something we, as a department, are extremely proud of.

Vision for P.E. at The Wilnecote School

 

We will provide a challenging and safe environment for high quality teaching and learning. This will lead to enjoyment in participation, developing a love of sport and lead to lifelong participation in sport/physical activity.

Intent

It is our intent, at The Wilnecote School, to teach students skills that will positively impact on their future. We will deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all students to succeed in all physical activities we offer. We will teach pupils how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and building resilience. Students will strive to achieve their very best in their physical education lessons.

Implementation

Students at The Wilnecote School, in both KS3 and KS4, participate in high quality PE lessons. The programme of study incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all students develop the confidence, resilience, and the appreciation of their own, and others’, skills and abilities. Opportunities are provided for all pupils to engage in extracurricular activities, in addition to competitive sporting events. This inclusive approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also physical and social well-being.

Impact

Our KS3 and KS4 core PE curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all pupils at The Wilnecote School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines PE and sport promotes. Within lessons, students are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. The impact of PE is therefore to motivate students to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way to live happy and healthy lives.
