Miss DickinsHead of PE

The Physical Education department is made up of six specialist PE teachers, each with a passion for equipping our students with the skills and knowledge across a wide range of sports and physical activities. This helps them to foster a healthy and active lifestyle for a lifetime.

The department is led by Allie Dickins, a very experienced and extremely enthusiastic PE practitioner who has competed at a national and regional level in several sports. She uses her passion for team sports, athletics, and swimming to help students experience success both inside and outside of lessons.

Emma Abbott has been at The Wilnecote School for over 20 years. She brings a keen passion for netball and girls’ football to the department. Emma is the mentor for physical education students on placement within the department, sharing her skills and passion for physical education.

Both Allie and Emma are key figures in the organisation of school sports in Tamworth, leading the Tamworth School Sport Association to provide young people across Tamworth with the opportunity to compete against each other and to represent the town in a range of different sports.

Olly Doyle started his journey at The Wilnecote School in September 2022 as an Early Career Teacher (ECT). He brings a wealth of new ideas to our curriculum and has boosted our fantastic extra-curricular provision. His passion for football has provided students with further opportunities across Staffordshire and the region.

Tom Croydon has taught at The Wilnecote School since September 2021. Prior to this, he worked at a school in Birmingham for over 15 years, predominantly as a PE teacher but also with responsibility for educational visits and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. As an Assistant Headteacher for Curriculum, Enrichment, and Cultural Development, he ensures the effective delivery of the department’s LIFE programme, which equips students for a successful life beyond school.

Mark Herbert is also an Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), as well as Alternative Provision (AP) and Internal Exclusion (IE). His role helps the department to meet the needs of every learner and provides us with the latest research to support the development of each individual.

David Foskett, our Headteacher, also teaches within the department and leads our extra-curricular basketball provision. He brings a vast experience of teaching various sports to the department and ensures that it continues to strive for the highest standards.

Vision for PE at The Wilnecote School

The PE team shares a vision that drives the teaching and learning within the department, fostering a genuine team atmosphere where ideas and dynamic thinking on teaching and learning are openly shared. The PE team believes that a good physical education not only develops physical performance and enjoyment but also leads to the growth of individual character skills needed to be an active citizen and lead a fulfilling life.

The team’s shared vision and strong ethos ensure all students make excellent progress in every aspect of PE at The Wilnecote School, which is something the department is extremely proud of.

The strong foundation of key physical education concepts taught in lessons develops the practical and personal skills that will allow our students to maintain their physical, emotional, and social wellbeing for life.

As well as consistently guiding students to excellent results in the VCert Technical Award in Health and Fitness and Sport and Coaching Principles, the Physical Education Department provides many opportunities for students to perform within the school, Tamworth, and beyond due to its extensive extra-curricular programme and teams.

As physical educators, the PE team guides students to develop the strength of character to learn from their mistakes and create a better performance in the future. They achieve this by practising and developing the skills and knowledge students are experiencing across the key stages.

The PE team demonstrates their own love of learning and their passion for all aspects of sport and physical activity by keeping themselves up to date with knowledge, training, reading, and, of course, by actively participating themselves.
