Listen to this news story read by Billy from Year 8
In an exciting debut, The Wilnecote School’s Year 7, 8, and 9 basketball team faced off against the formidable St James Academy in the national U14 cup. Despite being the underdogs, Wilnecote School made a strong start, taking a 5-0 lead with an impressive three-pointer right at the beginning of the game.
The team, composed mainly of Year 7 and 8 students, displayed remarkable determination and spirit throughout the match. However, the size and strength of the much older year 9 squad-heavy St James Academy team proved too much to overcome. The game concluded with a score of 44-13 in favor of St James Academy.
Coach and Headteacher Mr. Foskett praised the team’s efforts, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of our students. They showed great heart and teamwork against a very strong opponent. This experience will only make us better and more prepared for future competitions.”
Mr. Foskett also commended the team, stating, “Our students demonstrated true sportsmanship and resilience. This was our first time entering the national U14 cup, and while the result wasn’t in our favor, the lessons learned and the spirit shown by our team are invaluable. We look forward to building on this foundation and achieving even greater things in the future.”
While the final score might not reflect it, the Wilnecote students’ valiant efforts and sportsmanship were evident. This first foray into the national competition has set a solid foundation for future success, and the team can hold their heads high, knowing they gave it their all against one of the tournament favorites.
Congratulations to all the players for their hard work and dedication!
