Wilnecote School recently hosted a unique lunchtime initiative designed to expand students’ culinary repertoire and foster a deeper appreciation for seafood. The event, a practical cookery workshop centred on the preparation of mussels, proved a resounding success, engaging pupils from across all year groups and fostering a vibrant atmosphere of collaborative learning.

The workshop, meticulously organised by the school’s Design and Technology (D&T) department, offered students the opportunity to actively participate in the creation of two distinct mussel dishes. Participants were presented with the choice of preparing mussels in a classic creamy lemon and garlic sauce, or a robust garlic tomato sauce. Both options were served with an ample supply of freshly baked crusty bread, intended to complement the rich sauces and enhance the overall dining experience.

The event’s format emphasised hands-on learning, allowing pupils to gain practical experience in the preparation and cooking of mussels. Under the guidance of experienced staff, students were instructed in the proper handling of ingredients, the application of various cooking techniques, and the importance of flavour balance. The workshop not only provided an opportunity to develop practical skills but also served as an educational platform, imparting knowledge about the nutritional value and sustainable sourcing of seafood.

The enthusiastic participation of both students and staff was a testament to the event’s success. Teachers actively engaged with the pupils, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared learning. The inter-year group interaction further enhanced the experience, creating a dynamic environment where students could learn from one another.

Mrs Collier commented, “We were delighted to witness the enthusiasm and engagement of our pupils during this unique culinary experience. Providing opportunities for students to explore diverse culinary traditions and develop practical skills is an integral part of our educational philosophy. This workshop not only introduced our students to a new and delicious ingredient but also fostered a sense of community and shared learning.”

The school would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the following organisations for their invaluable support in making this event possible: @OffshoreShell, @dfdsgroup, @RTShellfish, @FoodTCentre, and @FishmongersCo. Their contributions were instrumental in providing the resources and expertise necessary to deliver a truly enriching experience for the students. The event served as a valuable opportunity for students to broaden their culinary horizons and develop a greater understanding of the diverse flavours and techniques within the realm of seafood cookery, and was only possible thanks to the generous support of our industry partners.
