Books in a Jar:
Wilnecote Students Get Creative for World Book Day
Listen to this news story read by Billy from Year 8
At The Wilnecote School, we are committed to fostering a love for reading among our KS3 students in innovative and engaging ways.
With reading for pleasure at an all-time low in the UK, only 34.6% of children and young people aged 8 to 18 reporting that they enjoy reading in their free time in 2024.
We believe it is more important than ever to inspire students to connect with books in creative ways.

Year 7’s also received a complimentary book from Mrs Glover.

To address this, our KS3 students took on a unique challenge for World Book Day: to capture the essence of a book within the confines of a jar.
This artistic task encouraged them to think beyond the pages, visually representing the themes, characters, and narratives of their chosen stories.
Designed as part of our World Book Day celebrations, this project allowed students to engage with literature in a hands-on and imaginative way, reinforcing the joy of reading through artistic expression.
Students had the option of picking any book they liked, and the three winners from each year group would receive prizes.
The winning jars would also be on display in the library.
Mrs Glover, one of the members of staff judging the Book in a Jar task, spoke about how hard was to pick the winners.
“We had some amazing entries from all KS3 year groups, and it was incredibly hard for me and Mrs Whiffin to pick the winners”
There were plenty of jars in all shapes and sizes, and all the students worked hard, but we could only have 9 winners.”
After four weeks of creativity and with many jars filling up our library, the winners have been announced.

Mr Croydon, Assistant Headteacher and trip leader commentted
“It was truly inspiring to witness the ‘Proud, Ambitious, Respectful, and Kind’ spirit of our students shine so brightly during the ski trip. Their enthusiasm, resilience, and camaraderie were a joy to behold. They embraced the challenges of the slopes with courage and good humour, demonstrating a remarkable level of personal growth throughout the week.”
As a school we are incredibly proud of all the students who participated in this unforgettable adventure. They returned home with a wealth of exciting memories, stories to share, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the winter landscape.
