Football Fever: District and County Cup Success!

It was an action-packed first term for our footballers at The Wilnecote School, with silverware already in the trophy cabinet and exciting County Cup fixtures on the horizon. Here is the latest update from the pitch.

Year 7: Resilient District Champions

Our Year 7 squad has shown incredible character recently. Following a tough exit from the County Cup, the boys displayed fantastic resilience and determination to bounce back in style. Their hard work paid off as they were crowned District Champions after winning the Tamworth 7-a-side tournament. It is a testament to their team spirit that they turned their season around so quickly.

Year 8: District Champions & Quarter-Final Bound

The Year 8 team is mirroring the success of their debut season, securing their own District Championship title. More importantly, the boys have shown great maturity in transitioning from 9-aside to a new 11-aside system.

The team is also charging forward in the County Cup after a clinical 2-0 victory over De Ferrers, featuring goals from Harrison L and Harry C. They now face an away trip to Blythe Bridge in the quarter-finals this January. We are immensely proud of the work ethic they have shown in adapting to the full-sized pitch.

Year 9: Double Champions Setting the Standard

Our reigning County Cup Champions, the Year 9s, continue to set the gold standard. After adding the District Championship to their honours list with a win in the Tamworth tournament, they secured their place in the County Cup quarter-finals with a dominant 4-0 win against King Edward VI (Lichfield).

Michael C opened the scoring with a brilliant header, followed by a clinical hat-trick from Oskar S. The team is now preparing for a massive home fixture against Erasmus Darwin in the next round. Their commitment to maintaining the high standards they set last year is truly impressive.

Mr Doyle, Teacher of PE and Team Coach, commented:

“I am incredibly proud of the standards these young men are setting for themselves. Across all year groups, we are seeing a fantastic blend of tactical growth and mental toughness.

Watching the Year 7s bounce back from disappointment to take the District title, and seeing the Year 8s adapt so seamlessly to the 11-aside game, shows the depth of talent we have here. With the Year 9s continuing their dominance as County Cup champions, the bar is high, but the hard work they are putting in during training suggests they are more than ready for the challenges coming in January.”
