Duke of Edinburgh - Summer Term 2024

This term saw our Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Bronze and Silver Award students return victorious from their expeditions, marking a fantastic end to a year of challenges, personal growth, and unforgettable adventures (including, we can’t forget, the occasional pitstop at a Peak District cafe!).

Bronze Expedition: A Journey of Discovery

Our Year 9 Bronze participants embarked on a two-day, one-night expedition in the Kingsbury Waterpark area. Armed with maps, compasses, and a healthy dose of teamwork (and maybe a touch of competition!), they navigated challenging terrain, putting their newly acquired map-reading and survival skills to the test.

Daisy shared her experience: “The Bronze expedition was both fun and tough. We learned so much about working together and never giving up. It was amazing to see how we all supported each other to overcome the challenges we faced.”

Accompanying teachers were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and determination. “The students showed incredible spirit,” said Mr McDonald. “Seeing them grow in confidence and ability throughout the expedition was truly rewarding.”

Silver Expedition: Stepping Up the Challenge (and Facing the Elements)

For their Silver Award, Year 10 students took on a more demanding adventure. They completed a two-day, two-night practice expedition followed by a three-day, two-night qualifying expedition, exploring the Peak District and the Forest of Dean respectively. These expeditions tested their endurance and advanced navigation skills as they tackled longer distances and more complex routes. Let’s just say, the horrendous weather during the practice pushed even the most resilient students to their limits… but they persevered!

Oliver described the practice expedition: “The Silver practice expedition really pushed us, but it was totally worth it. After all, anything worthwhile isn’t always easy.”

Eveie commented on the challenging terrain of the qualifying expedition: “That hill was so steep, even my knees were sweating!”

The school’s DofE Assessor, Mrs Ager, commended the students’ dedication: “Completing the Silver expedition is a significant achievement. Our students showed immense commitment and perseverance throughout. We are incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Looking Ahead

With the successful completion of these expeditions, the school is already gearing up for the next set of DofE challenges. Many Bronze awardees are eager to take on the Silver level, while Silver participants are now focused on completing their Skills, Volunteering, and Physical sections to secure their awards. Our current Year 8 students should keep their ears open for how they can get involved next year.

A huge congratulations to all the students who participated, and a big thank you to Mr Savage, Miss Tongue, Mr McDonald, Mrs Ager, and Miss Dickins for their support.

Here’s to a fantastic year of DofE, and we can’t wait to see what adventures next year holds!
