Students from across Tamworth’s high schools converged on Tamworth Stadium to compete for both school honours and a coveted place in the District Athletics team. The latter would represent Tamworth at the Staffordshire Schools County Finals.
Selection for this year’s team was fiercely contested, reflecting the high calibre of athletes on offer. A combination of trials, staff recommendations, and athletics club performance data informed the final squad selection.
The Wilnecote School fielded a full team of enthusiastic competitors from Years 7 to 10, who battled it out against the town’s finest athletes. For many, this was a debut competition, a demanding test of their skills against the best. Our athletes demonstrated excellent application of their training, displaying confidence and composure under pressure.
While nerves inevitably played their part, the team’s strong leadership and camaraderie were evident. Year 9 students even provided refreshments for their team-mates, creating a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere. Throughout the afternoon, The Wilnecote School consistently challenged for top spot, with the final outcome tantalisingly close.
The relay events promised to be decisive, with strict rules in place to prevent disqualifications. As field event results came in, it became clear that the overall winner would be determined by the final points tally. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, we secured second place overall, with a comfortable margin over third.
Congratulations to all students who took part, and especially to the sixteen athletes selected for the Tamworth District team. Your achievements are a credit to yourselves and the school.
