RAISING ASPIRATIONS AT THE WILNECOTE SCHOOL

The principal aim of our careers programme here at The Wilnecote School is prepare our young people for life beyond their education. We are committed to providing a high quality and comprehensive programme that motivates, inspires and challenges each of our students. The programme is embedded within the curriculum, including during tutor time as part of The Wilnecote Way. All aspects are designed to raise the aspirations of all students regardless of their age, background, ability or educational need. We want all of our students to feel prepared and knowledgeable about their next steps at all stages of their time in school, and to be equipped with knowledge, experience and confidence to take the next steps into the world of work.

Our Provision

 
Here is an outline of our careers programme. Please note this may be subject to change as we respond to opportunities as they become available. 

Key Stage 3

 

(Years 7,8 & 9)

 

All Students will be offered the following careers support and guidance within KS3.  They will all receive the following:

  • Identified curriculum support in all subjects promoting related job advice.
  • Allotted time through ‘Tutor Time’ for self-development focusing on lifestyle,  progression and employability skills.
  • Access to Start and Grofar which are careers software programmes to support learning
  • Year 9 will be invited to attend a Pre-Options Evening with Careers Support available.
  • Assemblies and other information on KS4 options including vocational and alternative
  • Enrichment and Enterprise activities take place which will include visits to a different university in each year group.

By the end of KS3 all students will have:

  • A better understanding of their strengths, achievements and areas for development as well as support to evaluate how these might inform future choices in learning and work.
  • A better understanding of the full range of 14-19 opportunities for progression.
  • An understanding of some of the qualities, attitudes and skills needed for employability.
  • Used online careers resources to research information about opportunities and apply their findings to help make informed choices for Key Stage 4 options.
  • Received appropriate advice and guidance on Key Stage 4 options and prepared an individual learning plan that sets broad learning goals.
  • Built a “locker” of experience and evidence of their individual progress
  • An understanding of the term LMI and how to use it to inform choices and make decisions.

Key Stage 4

 

(Years 10 & 11)

 

All students within KS4 will all receive the following help and support to:

  • Take part in a work experience placement which preferably focuses on students’ future career aspirations,  allowing learning about work through the experience of work.
  • Take part in the World of Work week, learning from a range of employers and developing individual employability skills.
  • Have presentations from a range of Post 16 providers.
  • Attend a 60 minute 1:1 Careers Interview within the first two terms of year 11.
  • Information on College ‘Open Days’.
  • Complete College Application forms, write a CV and letters of application
  • Take part in Professional practice interviews with interviewers from a wide range of professionals
  • Visit two more universities, one in year 10 and one in year 11.

By the end of Key stage 4, all students will have:

  • Enhanced their self-knowledge, career management and employability skills.
  • Used both the Start and Grofar ICT software and other sources of advice to investigate and explore future choices and progression routes.
  • Explored the World of Work through interactions with a range of employers and a placement in a work-based environment.
  • Been given direct access to employers, colleges and training providers.
  • Been given guidance to help identify a range of post-16 options and careers advice.
  • Been provided with the resources to complete the post-16 application process, including CV’s, personal statements, and preparation for interview.
  • Produced a challenging but realistic action plan for their future learning and work, by relating their abilities, attributes and achievements to the goals they have set themselves.
  • Used LMI as a guidance to decisions around post-16 applications and actions plans.
