What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader’s philosophy is that by using the system, students are motivated to read more and better books. Consequently, because reading is a foundational skill, other academic domains will improve in conjunction with reading skills. Since successful readers appreciate reading and school more than struggling students, attendance rates will improve along with increases in overall achievement and self-esteem.
At The Wilnecote School, we use Accelerated Reader across key stage 3. Our aim with the programme is for our students to develop their joy of reading, to improve each of the students’ reading ability and get them reading books that are right for their reading age as well as touching on skills needed across the curriculum.
Within English lessons there is time given to improve reading skills and there is targeted intervention for those that are struggling to make progress. Teachers will talk with any student they feel are not doing as well as they should be, and also talk to students who are progressing well. When the students receive regular feedback and praise from Accelerated Reader, teachers and librarians their confidence grows along with their skills.
Accelerated Reader Quizzes
- Accelerated Reader Quizzes can be accessed from home.
- These are an important way for us to track your reading skills.
- They will also help determine some book recommendations, based on your results and reading level.
- It is therefore very important that you make an honest attempt and try your best when completing the quizzes.
- The quizzes themselves are varied in length and should take between 5 and 15 minutes.
Completing a Quiz
- Type the title of your book into the ‘Find a Book’ bar and click on ‘search’.
- A list of possible books will appear.
- Find the book that you have read and click on ‘Take Quiz’.
- Your results are automatically saved when you have finished your quiz which will let your teacher see how you have done.
- If you are given the option of a Vocabulary quiz you should complete this. (Not all tests have this option yet!)
A genuine attempt at a will take between 5 and 15 minutes. Try your best!
