Shaping Futures: A Record-Breaking Careers Day at The Wilnecote School

The buzz was in the air in April as we hosted our highly anticipated Annual Careers Day. As a cornerstone of the school calendar that our students look forward to and ask about every year, expectations were high, and the event certainly delivered. This year, we welcomed an incredible 65 different exhibitors, ranging from local entrepreneurs and universities to post-16 providers and apprenticeship specialists. They were joined by a fantastic cohort of alumni, all coming together with a single mission: to inspire the next generation of Wilnecote talent.

Throughout the day, students from Years 8 to 11 moved through a vibrant marketplace of ideas, exploring career paths and routes into industry they may never have previously considered. To ensure everyone made the most of the wealth of knowledge in the room, students were tasked with engaging with at least eight different stands, completing a challenge sheet that sparked meaningful dialogue about everyday life in the professional world.

Miss Donald, Careers Lead, noted the impact of this interaction, saying: “It is wonderful to see our students so motivated and curious. Events like this are vital for broadening horizons and showing our young people that there is a vast world of opportunity waiting for them if they have the ambition to reach for it.”

The hall was filled with hands-on activities that brought different sectors to life. South Staffs College hosted a high-octane challenge that saw students racing to hammer a 4-inch nail into thick wood, with impressive times ranging from a lightning-fast 2.11 seconds to 33.76 seconds. Nearby, Rodbaston College brought a touch of the wild to the school, offering students the chance to hold giant snails, worms, and stick insects. The technical world was equally well-represented, with the BBC providing a mini radio deck for students to master the art of fading microphones, while Walsall NHS staff demonstrated the vital work of healthcare professionals using resuscitation dolls. From the analytical puzzles of a forensic scientist to the deeply moving personal story shared by Womanic, the diversity of roles on display was truly breath-taking.

Adding a personal touch to the proceedings, we were delighted to welcome back four former Wilnecote students who returned to share their success stories. Among them was James from Jayler, who spoke about his life as a touring musician and even managed to get several members of staff, including Mr Foskett, to test their skills on the electric guitar. The spirit of community continued with Martin Hall from the Tamworth TEDx committee, who shared his experiences and highlighted the many leadership opportunities available to young people today. Reflecting on the logistical success of the event,

Jayne Talbot, Careers Support and organiser of the day, commented: “Watching the months of planning come together in such a vibrant way is incredibly rewarding. The sheer variety of guests this year has provided a real spark for our students, and we are so grateful to every exhibitor who gave up their time to invest in our pupils’ futures.”

The feedback from our guests was exemplary, with many visitors commenting on the seamless organisation of the day and the wonderful behaviour of our students. Exhibitors were particularly impressed by the students’ curiosity and their willingness to dive into every activity with enthusiasm. As a result, many providers have already expressed their desire to return for future events, with some already in discussions with departments to run specific subject workshops. It was a truly inspirational day that achieved its core goal: raising the aspirations of our students and showing them that their future possibilities are endless.
