Literary Legends Take Over The Wilnecote School for World Book Day

The corridors of The Wilnecote School were transformed into the pages of a storybook this week as staff and students came together to celebrate World Book Day 2026.

From the Victorian streets of London to the deepest, darkest forests of Peru, the school was buzzing with a cast of characters that would rival any library shelf. The annual event, which celebrates the joy of reading and the power of imagination, saw teachers trading their usual attire for capes, whiskers, and even a few magnifying glasses.

A Who’s Who of Fiction

The morning started with a flurry of excitement as students spotted several famous faces during registration. Sherlock Holmes was seen investigating the mystery of the missing whiteboard pens, while Paddington Bear was reportedly scouting the canteen for any spare marmalade sandwiches.

The mischief didn’t stop there. Both Peter Rabbit and Toad of Toad Hall were seen making a swift exit from the staff room, likely avoiding a run-in with the formidable Dracula, who was spotted lurking in the cooler, shaded corners of the science block.

Drama in the Hallways

Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the day involved a certain terrifying headmistress. Miss Trunchbull was seen patrolling the halls, and witnesses report a narrow escape for poor Amanda Thripp, who luckily managed to keep her pigtails intact despite the threat of a legendary “hammer throw.”

The Heart of the Celebration

Beyond the costumes and the laughter, the day served as a powerful reminder of why literacy remains at the heart of our community. Seeing staff bring these iconic stories to life sparked countless conversations about favourite books, childhood heroes, and the thrill of discovering a new author.

Mrs Whiffin, Literacy Lead at The Wilnecote School, commented on the success of the day:

“World Book Day is always a highlight of the school calendar. It’s a fantastic way to show our students that reading isn’t just a classroom requirement—it’s an adventure that stays with you for life.”

A huge thank you to all the staff who put such incredible effort into their costumes and to the students for engaging so enthusiastically with the day’s events.
