Wilnecote Students Conquer the Peaks on Challenging Silver DofE Practice

October saw our year 10 students start their silver DofE. After a full day of learning at school, our determined Silver Duke of Edinburgh participants set off on their practice expedition to the stunning Peak District. Excitement filled the minibus as students made their way to their first campsite, Hulme End Campsite, ready to put their skills to the test.

Upon arrival, the sun was setting fast, so everyone got straight to work pitching tents and cooking their evening meals. The excitement of the journey soon gave way to tiredness, and the group settled in for the night, knowing that the following day would be full of adventure and challenge.

Friday morning began damp and misty as students packed up camp and prepared for the day ahead. Once the walking groups were organised and setting off at 10-minute intervals, the expedition was officially underway! However, the first challenge came quickly when the leading groups missed the very first track and found themselves over a mile in the wrong direction. It was an early but valuable lesson in the importance of teamwork, map reading, and staying calm under pressure.

As the day went on, the sun broke through the clouds, rewarding the groups with stunning views as they made their way across some demanding terrain towards the beautiful Dovedale Valley. The iconic stepping stones proved to be a real highlight, and after a long day of hiking, the tired but happy students arrived at Bank Top Farm Campsite, just outside Ashbourne. With tents set up, evening meals cooked, and warm showers enjoyed, it wasn’t long before everyone was ready for another well-deserved early night.

This was a tough but incredibly rewarding expedition, and all students should be proud of what they achieved. The teamwork, independence, and resilience shown throughout the weekend were outstanding.

A huge well done to everyone involved — roll on July, when the qualifying expedition takes place in the beautiful Forest of Dean!

Saturday morning greeted the group with a beautiful sunrise. Spirits were high as students cooked breakfast, packed up camp, and supported each other in preparing for the final day. It was fantastic to see so much encouragement and teamwork amongst the groups.
Mr Appiah, on his very first DofE expedition, commented on how impressed he was with the students’ resilience and teamwork, urging them to finish as strongly as they had started.

The final stretch followed the famous Tissington Trail, offering both a physical and mental challenge. Despite the tired legs and heavy rucksacks, every single student showed true determination and completed the route successfully.
