
Wilnecote Year 8 Crowned County Cup Champions in Dramatic Final at Stafford Town

Wilnecote Year 8 football team has achieved a memorable victory, lifting the County Cup after a thrilling 2-1 win against a strong Cheslyn Hay side in the final held at Stafford Town Football Club. The hard-fought match, played in front of enthusiastic support, capped off a fantastic cup run for the Wilnecote youngsters.

Wilnecote got off to a flying start, taking the lead through a well-taken goal from James R, setting the tone for an exciting encounter. Further opportunities were created in the first half, with Theo B demonstrating excellent movement that caused problems for the Cheslyn Hay defence.

The second half saw Cheslyn Hay pull a goal back to make it 1-1, leading to a tense conclusion. As Cheslyn Hay pushed for another, Wilnecote’s defence, superbly marshalled throughout, and goalkeeper Samuel L, whose fantastic saves were vital, held strong to maintain their chance of victory.

The decisive moment arrived in the final minute of the game. A clever looping pass from Dougie D found Oskar S, who produced a moment of brilliance. His fantastic diving header flew past the Cheslyn Hay goalkeeper and into the net, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Wilnecote players, staff, and supporters.

Wilnecote Team Manager and PE Teacher, Mr Doyle, commented on the team’s performance: “I am incredibly proud of the lads. They have worked so hard throughout this competition and showed tremendous character, especially when Cheslyn Hay equalised. To win it in the last minute like that is truly special and a testament to their never-give-up attitude.”

Mr Foskett added, “Watching our Year 8s lift the County Cup was a fantastic moment for the entire school community. Their performance on the pitch, and their conduct throughout the tournament, truly embodied our school words. They were Proud to represent Wilnecote, incredibly Ambitious in their pursuit of victory, Respectful towards their opponents and officials, and showed great Kindness and support for each other. This success is richly deserved and a brilliant example for everyone.”

Winning the cup in such dramatic fashion, combined with the resilience shown throughout their entire cup campaign, has created a truly unforgettable moment for the Year 8 pupils and the staff involved. This significant achievement provides a strong foundation and invaluable experience for the team to build upon in the future.
