Leicester Tigers Rugby Day
Article written and read by Adelina from Year 8
At The Wilnecote School, we give our students many opportunities in our wide variety of subjects, including a recent rugby tournament, all thanks to Leicester Tigers. A group of Year 7 and 8 girls participated in after-school club training sessions with the support of the rugby club. The girls learned a range of skills such as how to tackle properly and safely, and different ways of passing. Unfortunately, when the girls arrived at the tournament, they were the only girl team there. Instead of playing against other teams, the girls used their new techniques exceptionally well and enjoyed a one-on-one coaching session with a Leicester Tigers coach for the entire afternoon. All the girls had a great time.
We interviewed the team’s captain, Sadie, about their experience:
What were you doing during practice? And what did you learn? – “The team learned lots of skills such as: passing, learning to fall properly when you get tackled, and tackling other players.”
How was your ‘tournament’ against each other? – “Our tournament was great, everyone put in lots of hard work, determination, and commitment.”
How were your coaches during your practice sessions and tournaments? – “The coaches were very nice. They had fun activities for us to do & they explained what to do and how to do it extremely well.”
How was your team’s progress? – “The team’s progress was amazing and progressed through every session. Everyone put what they learned into our games so well, during training and our tournament.”
Are you proud of your team during your time with Leicester Tigers? – “Yes, I am immensely proud of our team. Everyone who took part was so committed and hardworking.”
What would you do next time? – “If we were able to do this again, I think everyone should mix up together and talk to someone in the team they wouldn’t always do.”
