Mr OglebyHead of D&T
The Design and Technology department here at The Wilnecote School is a well-resourced department offering a range of subjects and specialisms for students. At The Wilnecote School, our experienced and passionate Design and Technology (D&T) staff provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment in which students can be innovative, take risks, become more resourceful, be problem solvers and develop as capable learners being able to learn a range of new skills and to learn if they fail, turning failure into success. As educators we aim to provide our students to have the strength of character to know that they can learn from their mistakes and create a better product in the future through practising and developing the skills and knowledge that they are experiencing across the key stages. We also aim to demonstrate our own love of learning and our passion for our subject to our students by demonstrating that we as staff continue to keep ourselves up to date with our knowledge, training and reading, and by supporting colleagues and other subjects with our skills across the school for other events such as the school drama production.
Vision for D & T at The Wilnecote School
Design and Technology is all around us in our modern world. Learning about Design and Technology helps our students understand the world in which they are living, and actively engage in it. It helps them know where we have been and develop where we are going.
The Design and Technology curriculum at The Wilnecote School consists of a range of creative, imaginative and innovative experiences of designing and practical based activities, using a range of materials and processes across a wide range of learning experiences. Our subject draws on additional knowledge from other STEM subjects and links to other curriculum areas. The curriculum is designed to give all students the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge to engage positively with materials, components, products, and technologies in the world around them. Through these types of activities students are actively contributing to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves and their community.
The D&T curriculum at The Wilnecote School has been developed from the D & T National Curriculum POS. The curriculum is designed to be progressive, so that students can build on the skills and knowledge they learn and master them.
At key stage 3 all students study Design and Technology/Food on a rotation system. They will study approximately 14 lessons in each topic area. Our curriculum is based around the learning and knowledge and skill development. Within our curriculum we study a wide of topic areas including Users, needs & design contexts; Design Strategies and communicating ideas; Past and present designers; Levers and mechanisms; Electronics; textiles; Materials, Categories, sources, origins, selection & properties and working with those materials to create successful products. The D & T curriculum does not teach these areas in isolation but is structured so that students are able to engage in their learning by revisiting and constructing knowledge and skills throughout each year they are with us in the department.
We aim to ensure that our students achieve the best possible experiences in Design and Technology, to become lifelong learners sharing the same joy of the subject that their teachers have and sharing this in their later lives to their own children.
