On Thursday 20th June, Wilnecote School was lucky enough to host a visit from Jamie McDonald, also known as Adventureman! Jamie’s talk left a lasting impression on our students, as he shared his incredible journey from being a child told he might need a wheelchair to becoming a record-breaking runner.

Jamie’s story is one of true determination. He overcame challenges and defied expectations, cycling from Bangkok all the way to Gloucester to raise money for the children’s ward where he spent a significant part of his childhood. He didn’t stop there – he went on to set a new world record for the longest ever bike ride and became the first person to run across Canada completely on his own!

Inspired by Jamie’s talk, students in Years 7 and 8 took on a challenge of their own. They filled out pledge cards, setting personal goals for what they wanted to achieve that afternoon, in the next six months, and even ten years down the line! The aspirations of our Wilnecote students are truly inspiring, ranging from representing England in the World Cup to becoming doctors, pilots, or even marathon runners themselves. It was a privilege to see these completed pledge cards, which will now be displayed in tutor rooms to serve as a constant reminder of each student’s goals.

The afternoon saw Year 7 and 8 students put their fitness to the test on a 1km course. They had 30 minutes to complete as many laps as they could, and some truly went the extra mile (or kilometre!), running an impressive 5 or 6 laps. Others achieved their own personal victories by simply not giving up and keeping moving for the entire 30 minutes. At the end of each session, certificates were handed out to students who demonstrated exceptional effort, and one student from each year group even received a special prize: a cape and a copy of Jamie’s bestselling book!

It was fantastic to see so many Wilnecote students motivated and inspired by Jamie’s visit. We are all excited to see them set themselves ambitious goals and strive to achieve them!
