World Book Day may have been a few weeks ago now, but we are still enjoying the fantastic visual displays on show around the school which were the result of our form competition.

To celebrate World Book Day 2024, each form group was given the name of a different author. The challenge was to promote their author and the books he/she has written by decorating their form door. Over 30 different authors were represented around the school through some stunningly creative displays.

The competition was conceived as a way of promoting Reading for Pleasure by informing our students of the wide range of books out there just waiting to be discovered . Any student who is intrigued and wants to find out more, will find all the writers represented on the shelves of our school library.

There was a winning form in each year group. In year 7, 7 CT created a vibrant display for the writer Mark Lowery. Students in year 7 will know him from his book “The Jam Doughnut That Ruined My Life”. When a photo of the door was sent to Mark Lowery, we had a response back from him of “Love it!!!”.

In year 8, the winning form was 8 VLD. This was a truly beautiful display representing the writer, Katharine Orton. Katharine was another writer who responded when we sent her pictures of the door. She commented “Oh my goodness! This is incredible. Utterly speechless!”. I think it is fair to say that she was really impressed.

The winning form in year 9 created yet another stunning door showcasing the writer, Holly Jackson. A huge well done to 9CHB. This display was so eye-catching and informative and hopefully will have encouraged some of our students to pick up and try one of her books.

A big well done to 10 TW for winning with their door display for the writer Colleen Hoover. This group focussed on one of the books she has written and created a delicate display complete with paper flowers.

Sarah J Maas was the winning writer for 11 LT. This was a beautiful door, understated but very effective. Miss Tongue was justifiably proud of what her students had created.

The final winning door was that created by the students in our ASD unit. They clearly played to their individual talents and created such an imaginative display for J K Rowling ,with origami dragons, a sorting hat and a golden snitch.

Each year The Wilnecote School celebrates World Book Day with a variety of activities, from staff dressing as their favourite book character to a guess the character hunt for students.  This year The Wilnecote School decided to do something a little different.  ALL students in years 7, 8 and 9 were tasked with designing a book character using only a wooden spoon, as part of their Art and Design homework.

The response to this challenge was outstanding, with many imaginative designs being brought in.  There were lots of Harry Potter characters, various superheroes, Mr Men, Paddington Bear and even a War of the Worlds creation!  The majority of the spoons are on display in the library so do come along to see the creativity of key stage 3.
