The first day of secondary school is a major milestone, and the Class of 2031 has made a brilliant start at The Wilnecote School. From overcoming morning nerves to meeting friends and learning classroom expectations, our newest Year 7 students have settled perfectly into our friendly place where everyone is part of the school.

Stepping through the school gates for the very first time can feel like a monumental leap, bringing a natural mix of excitement and apprehension. One of our new Year 7 pupils explained that she felt quite nervous initially, but the moment she arrived and spotted her friends, all her butterflies completely disappeared.

Ensuring that those early worries melt away is a top priority for the staff. Mr Hyden, Head of Year 7 and Transition Lead, explained that the first day is a huge step focused entirely on helping students find their way around and make new friends. He noted that the pastoral team is especially mindful of pupils who have arrived as the sole student from their previous primary school, ensuring they feel instantly welcomed.

That warm welcome was amplified during the morning assembly by headteacher Mr Foskett. He offered an incredibly positive and uplifting introduction to the school, expressing his absolute delight at seeing so many eager faces ready to embark on their secondary journey. As part of this highly encouraging start, Mr Foskett introduced the students to the SLANT method, explaining it as a simple, supportive shorthand way to understand classroom expectations so that everyone can thrive together.

When asked about the highlights of their first day, the students had plenty to share. Many mentioned how much they enjoyed the kindness of others during break times and tutor periods. The thrill of discovering their new classes and meeting new friends was a popular answer, alongside a special mention for maths lessons. Lunchtime in the new canteen was also a massive success, with pupils quickly mastering how to order the highly popular pizza and chicken and chips.

Looking ahead to the rest of the year, our students are already setting their sights on exciting goals. While some are focusing on building their confidence and expanding their friendship groups, one ambitious pupil is eagerly anticipating his science lessons so he can make explosions.

Reflecting on a highly successful day, Mr Hyden had a reassuring final message for families. He shared that he had seen positive smiles all day long, with students happily talking about how much they enjoyed their lessons. He added that no matter how much you might have worried at home, the students have done everyone proud, and their very first day has been brilliant.
